The Mazda RX7 (FD) arrived in the showrooms of Mazda dealers in 1991. Like its predecessor, the RX7 (FD) was powered by a 2-disc Wankel engine. In the fourth RX7 generation with the internal identifier "FD", the engine power increased up to 280 hp (last Japan version), which helped the vehicle to vehement driving performance. Partly responsible for this power output was the sequential twin turbocharger. Here, a small turbine delivers some boost pressure even at low engine speeds, which greatly minimizes the typical turbo lag.
At higher engine speeds and thus exhaust gas mass stom, the larger turbine works along with it and thus again provides a tremendous boost. Consistent lightweight construction, especially in the areas of chassis, wheels, windshield, and the lightweight engine, resulted in a fairly low curb weight of about 1300 kg. In conjunction with the drag coefficient (CW) of 0.31, which was good for the time, the vehicle achieved an above-average top speed, as well as high longitudinal and lateral acceleration values.
Unfortunately, the Wankel engine emitted significantly more pollutants than the gasoline engine. With the introduction of the 94/12/EG (Euro 2 – exhaust emission standard) in 1996, the RX7 (FD) was no longer allowed to be registered in Germany and was taken out of the program. In Japan, however, it continued to be produced and sold until 2002. The high cost price of approx. 80,000 DM let the sales figures in Germany fail however from the outset quite small.
The equipment included: power steering, 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, driver airbag (from 1994 also passenger airbag), ABS, torsional differential, climate control, sunroof, power windows and aluminum rims.
